Make Singing a part of your child’s world

With Royal Opera soprano Melissa Alder

Over the Rainbow Singing

Over the Rainbow Singing develops children's vocal confidence through singing, listening, rhythm, performance and fun!

Melissa Alder, a professional opera singer for the last fifteen years is using her expertise closer to home in classes aimed specifically at making singing special for children in the Buckinghamshire village of Chalfont St Giles. By keeping the classes relatively small, it is possible to support young voices that are developing at different speeds whilst still providing the security and fun of singing in a group.

“The idea for Over the Rainbow Singing came from trying to find a class for my eldest daughter”, says Melissa. “There are many pre-school music groups but very little aimed specifically at a purely vocal approach for older children.” The aim is for all the children to not only have fun but to be introduced to how the voice works, how to use it, look after it and develop it as a musical instrument as well as building a firm foundation in all round musicianship.”

Together with a choreographer and a musical arranger the children sing a wide range of music, from folk songs, children’s oratorios to songs from the shows, develop performance skills, as well as playing various games to improve their rhythm, concentration and team-building. Over the Rainbow Singing stage public concerts from time to time and have raised money for the Community Library and the Parish Church, Chalfont St Giles in the process.

Melissa studied at the Royal Academy of Music and has been a professional singer for fifteen years. Having begun her career at Glyndebourne she is currently a soprano at The Royal Opera House Covent Garden.

Over the Rainbow Singing run three intensive courses a year, held in the Memorial Hall, Chalfont St Giles, during the Easter and Summer holidays, and the Autumn half term.  Courses are aimed at children from  Nursery to Year Six..
